Provenance |
Camp Hale, Colorado is located at a whistle stop called Pando and was eighteen miles from the town of Leadville, a former copper mining town in the late 1880s. The area is extremely mountainous and Camp Hale was built in a drained out crater. According to the Rand-McNally Atlas, the population of Pando was nine. Roy Arntsen spent time at Camp Hale in September 1943 at Camp Hale mostly spent on playing good guys versus bad guys. They were specifically trained for warfare in the mountains. The camp itself was situated almost ten thousand feet above sea level. At night we poured water on the floor of the barracks to get a little moisture in the room. In the morning we could skate on the floor, as it turned to ice during the night. Approaching Camp Hale, there was usually a cloud hanging over it from heating furnace smoke in each barrack; the smoke was black. Camp Hale's nickname became Camp "Hack", as most of us developed a pretty strong cough. Resource: Arntsen, "The Tenth Mountain Man", Page 14 |
